Debby Birch (nee Tushaw)

In memory of
DEBBY BIRCH

It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that our Scout Leader Debby Birch (nee Tushaw) died peacefully on 14th January 2011. Debby joined the group in 2003 when it was in dire need of support. She almost single handedly ran the group and the executive roles. Debby tirelessly worked for the group playing roles in cubs and scouts for 5th Rayleigh. Her hard work was recognised when she received her Medal of Merit award in 2010. Debby was always available to help whether it was running the cake stall for firework night at Belchamps, doing a sponsored walk along Hadrian's wall, running regular week long summer camps for the scouts and catering for family camp, her support and energy was boundless. In that time our group grew from just over 20 members to around eighty. Our thoughts are with David, Ben, Gracie, Dave, Mel and Dean.

Friends and family gathered together at Thriftwood Scout Activity Centre on June 12th 2011 to witness Debby's final resting place with the planting of a tree in her memory. It is situated at the end of the Archery Range, as Debby was a member of the Essex Scout Archery Team. As Centre Manager, Colin, said, Debby will now be Range Captain forever! As a group, we are keen supporters of Thiftwood and it will be lovely to be able to visit the tree and remember Debby on every visit.

We are pleased to announce that Jason Hughes has agreed to take on the role of Group Scout Leader.  We also welcome Rachael Locke who has joined the group leaders as Assistant Scout Leader. We would like to wish them every success in their new roles.

As of the annual census at the end of January, the group grew for the 6th successive year and now numbers 77, an increase of 20% over 2009.
